Our Community Garden

With its mission of “Teach, Feed, Succeed," the Carolina Human Reinvestment (SC) Community Garden started as an outdoor classroom for our students during COVID. It has evolved into a much bigger and more meaningful project in our community. It has grown from a garden to a farm.  Since we started in May of 2020, we harvested and donated 8,000lbs of food in our community from our traditional raised bed garden. We’ve supplied more than 6000 heads of lettuce from our signature hydroponic system. We accomplished this with the help of our incredible volunteers that devoted more than 6000 hours of their time, talents, and efforts. Our produce is donated to Food Pantries and Church Cafes throughout Georgetown County.

Our garden model has not only been studied by Clemson University, but we've also been visited by representatives from DHEC, The US Department of Justice, the Georgetown Department of Juvenile Justice, Saint James Health and Wellness, the Molina Healthcare System, Tidelands Health, the Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council, (among others) in discussion on partnering and creating programs to aid and help both our youth and adult communities.  Additionally, we are establishing onsite gardens at our after-school programs.

Community gardens are fast becoming a national movement. Addressing multiple and diverse issues such as health, education, environment, and local ecological sustainability, to providing a cultural and social space for the community, we bridge all age and socioeconomic groups of the Georgetown and Pawleys Island communities.
